At some point, hominids could make and use tools. When this happened, our direct competition were other hominids that can also use tools. Therefore, in competition for resources better toolmakers and users pretty much made slightly worse tool users (aka dumber) hominids extinct. Some are known as Neanderthal, Cro Magnon, Denosivan, and every other "kind of smart hominid" we haven't dug up yet. What's left in the end is other non-tool animals and Homo Sapiens (which can make Nuclear Weapons).

We simply have more brain cells than any other animal that is the same weight as we are. Big animals have bigger brains, but animals of the same size should have similar sized brains if they are equally smart. We have a lot more brain cells than animals our size. EQ (Encephalization quotient) is a measure of how brainy animals are. We have an EQ of 7-7.6. In comparison, cats and dogs have an EQ of 1. Horses have an EQ of 0.9. Chimps have an EQ of around 2.5 and dolphins have an EQ of about 5. Besides humans, the smartest animals are dolphins.

Humans are fragile so the dumb humans didn't survive to have dumb kids .
