How did the Lunar Rover work?

How were the astronauts able to fit what was effectively a car into a space craft as small as the LEM? And what would they have done if the vehicle broke somewhere far away from the ship?

    It was a gimmick to boost the public interest  of the later moon landings.

  • It was fitted to the outside of the lander, not parked inside it. If the vehicle broke down, then the astronauts would have walked back. The rover only went as far as the astronauts could walk.

    It folded up into a section of the LM Descent Module.

    It was small and light, as it's total horsepower was one.

    the lunar rover folded into a small space under the lunar module descent stage and was unfolded when it was deployed. even the tires folded since they were made from aluminum mesh, not inflated rubber. because of the moon's low gravity, the rover didn't need to support as much weight as a vehicle on earth and could be built less sturdy from thinner materials to take less volume. if their car broke down the astronauts would simply need to walk home. it would take much longer but the mission made sure the astronauts never traveled further than walking distance.
