Why would anyone buy a car that isn’t a hybrid so they can go 55mpg?

Because after a fairly short time the amount of power the battery can hold from a charge is reduced and this carry's on till the battery finally fails.

Then your paying a small fortune to lug around dead weight.

Or a large fortune to get it replaced which can be not short of a new car.

Hybrids are at this time are a utter waste of time and money.

Better performance and a cheaper overall price are often worth the difference in saving a few bucks on gas.-----The higher price of the vehicle along with poor performance offset any gasoline savings in the long run

over here in europe we have euro6 diesel engines ...these are cleaner ..emission wise than most petrol cars ..as for hybrids ..they cause more pollution with brake and tyre wear ..electric cars are not clean

No idea , diesels are much better for low fuel consumption and performance can be really good too. BMWs and Audi’s 3 litres TDis are a match for most V8s but use half the fuel .

Hybrid cars cost more overall. A hybrid will cost the owner more than a gas powered vehicle for the life of the car.

Hybrids are bad for the environment as well.

Only a fool would buy a hybrid.

Some of us are not penny wise and pound foolish as it appears you are.

Not everybody puts MPG as their highest priority when buying a car. In the US, gas is relatively inexpensive compared to many other countries and many buyers aren't concerned with maximizing fuel economy.

My Focus gets 45 mpg on the highway and I don't have to clean-up the energizer bunny poop they leave in the driveway.

Hybrid are more expensive to buy and fix so poor people may not be able to afford them.  In addition making the batteries for those cars causes a lot of pollution so if you think you are helping the environment by using less oil the jury is still out on that one.

Some do not want to be seen driving a Prius.
