A small island 200 m wide is in the middle of an ocean. On one day, wave crests 50 m apart approach the island. On another day, wave crests 400 m apart approach the same island. In which case will there be a greater diffraction of the waves around the island?

Bats can hear sounds of frequencies as high as 100 000 Hz while a human can hear a sound of frequency 10 000 Hz.

Which frequency of sound would best diffract around a barrier through an opening such as a small hole in a wall?

If a small insect was flying behind a tree, which sound would more likely bend around the tree and reach the insect?

The maximum pressure of a steel tank is 125 atm. The tank is filled with a cold gas at room temperature, 21°C, and heated to 375°C. What is the maximum cold pressure of the gas such that the maximum pressure is not exceeded?

Convert Celsius to kelvin:

21°C + 273 = 294°K

375°C + 273 = 648°K

P1/ T1 = P2/ T2

P1/ 294K = 125 atm/ 648K

P1= 57 atm

A pulse of the shape below originates in spring A. The speed of the pulse in this spring is 4.0 m/s. Another spring, B, is connected to spring A. The speed of the pulse in spring B is 2.0 m/s. The “short” end of the original pulse is the right side with the steep decline.

draw a diagram showing the reflected pulse. In your diagram, pay particular attention to the wavelength of the reflected pulse, the amplitude of the pulse, whether or not it is inverted, and in what direction the “short” end of the pulse is facing.

Draw a diagram showing the partially transmitted pulse. In your diagram, pay particular attention to the wavelength of the transmitted pulse, the amplitude of the pulse, and in what direction the “short” end of the pulse is facing.

Of the quantities, speed, wavelength, frequency, and amplitude, which of these does not change as a wave is partially reflected or partially transmitted?

Of the quantities, speed, wavelength, frequency, and amplitude, which of these is always decreased in size as a wave is partially reflected or partially transmitted?

The speed of a transverse wave on a string is 450 m/s, while the wavelength is 0.18 m. The amplitude of the wave is 2.0 mm.

What is the total up and down distance moved by the wave-particle for each cycle of the wave?

What is the frequency of the wave?

What is the period of motion of the wave?

How many cycles of the wave would have to pass by a given point so that a particle on the string moves a total distance of 1.0 km?

How much time is required for a particle on a string to move through a total distance of 1.0 km?

1) If 358 g of KNO3 are dissolved in 650 mL of water at 80°C, at what temperature will solid settle out when it is cooled?

4) a. If a solution containing 40.0 g of KNO3 in 100 g of water at 100°C is cooled to 25°C, how much of the solid will settle out?

b. If you poured out half of the solution in (a) at 100°C, how many grams of the solid will the remaining solution contain?

c. If instead of pouring out as in (b), you boil away 50 mL of water and return the to 25°C, how many grams of solid will now remain in the solution?

suppose that an allele, d, of a sex-linked gene is recessive and lethal. A man marries a woman who is heterozygous for this gene. If the couple had many normal children, what would be the predicted sex ratio of these children?

Base your response on the number of predicted living children

- Genotypes of the parents

- Gene combination for the gametes of each parent

- A completed punnett square

- Genotype ratio of offspring (prediction)

- Phenotype ratio of offspring (prediction)

2. What is the pressure of 725 mL of a gas at 100.2 kPa if it’s volume is changed to 125 mL?

3. Explain why weather balloons are not completely filled with gas before they sail into the upper atmosphere.

4. The maximum lung capacity of an average adult is about 4-6 L. A scuba diver takes a breath of about 2.1 L of air at a depth of 30 m where the pressure is 405 kPa. If the diver holds his/her breath while rising to the surface, where the pressure is 102 kPa, what is the volume of air in the lungs. What is the likely result?
